Why you received an email from us

You're here because you got an email from james@getstepfree.com and wanted to check that it's real. It is. Here's the whole story in plain terms.

Yes, this is a real email from a real company

Step Free is a website accessibility scanning and repair service based in San Francisco, run by James A.. james@getstepfree.com is the address we use to contact website owners. It isn't spoofed and this isn't phishing.

Why we emailed you

We run automated scans of publicly accessible websites against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1 AA), the standard referenced in ADA website cases in the U.S. When a scan finds problems on a site, we email the owner to let them know and show them the report. That's all the email is: information about your own site, and an offer of a paid service you're free to accept or ignore.

What this email is not

What the report is

A list of the specific items on your site that a blind visitor's screen reader can't use, with a picture of your own homepage showing where they are. It's free. Your web person can fix everything on it without us.

What we sell

If you don't have a web person, we fix those items by hand inside your site's own editor for a flat $249, send you a dated before-and-after record, and can check the site again once a year for $99. Pricing is here.
